Moms are not immune.
That phrase carries so much weight. Our culture often paints a picture of the “supermom”. The one who does it all, never drops the ball, and somehow makes it look easy. But behind the images and expectations, mothers face real and serious mental health challenges.
Mental health conditions are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting 1 in 5 new moms.
Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in the postpartum period.
That reality is heartbreaking. It is also preventable. We can change it by talking openly about suicidal thoughts, connecting moms with care, and making sure no mom ever feels alone in her darkest moment.
If you are struggling, please know: you are not alone. Suicidal thoughts can feel overwhelming, but there are steps you can take right now to keep yourself safe and supported.
5 Ways to Cope with Suicidal Thoughts
1. Baby steps
Take things one moment at a time. You don’t have to solve everything at once. If you are safe right now, recognize that. If you don’t feel safe, please reach out to someone you trust or call a hotline (numbers below).
2. Speak up
Tell someone you trust how you’re feeling. It might feel scary to put words to it, but you deserve support. If you don’t have someone close to call, you can always reach out to us at (843) 410-3585 or call/text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
3. Distract your mind
Sometimes the first step is shifting your focus. Try a short walk with music, a shower, a coloring page, or even just a glass of water. Moving your body and breaking the mental loop can create space to breathe.
4. Reach out to a professional
Therapists, psychiatrists, and doctors are trained to help you through this. If you don’t know where to start, let us know. Postpartum Support Charleston can connect you with trusted local providers who understand perinatal mental health.
5. Create a crisis plan or box
A crisis plan is a list you can turn to in hard moments. People you can call, numbers to keep handy, ideas for coping. A crisis box might include comforting items like a favorite photo, a calming candle, a note from a loved one, or a favorite snack. Having tools ready makes it easier to act when you’re feeling low.
