October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. It is a time for our community to come together in remembrance and support. This month, we honor every parent who has loved and lost, and remind them that their stories matter.
On October 15, families around the world will light candles for World Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, creating a shared “Wave of Light” that circles the globe. Here in Charleston, we’ll gather together at Novant Health for a candlelight vigil.
It’s estimated that one in four mothers will experience the loss of a baby during pregnancy, delivery, or infancy. Behind that number are real people — mothers, fathers, and families. The journey after loss is deeply personal. For some, it brings sadness, confusion, or even moments of peace and gratitude for having known that love, however brief. Every emotion is valid. Every story is unique.
Finding Comfort and Connection
Grief can feel quiet and lonely, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Some parents find comfort in talking about their baby, while others need time and privacy. Both are okay. When you’re ready, spaces of support can make a difference. At Postpartum Support Charleston, we are here to walk alongside you. We offer support groups, peer connection, and a caring community that understands. Throughout this month, our “Share the Support” gatherings are open to all moms seeking peace, reflection, or simply a place to be surrounded by gentle understanding.
Honoring in Your Own Way
There’s no single way to remember. You might choose to:
- Light a candle on October 15 at 7 p.m.
- Plant something in your garden in honor of your baby.
- Write a letter or keep a small keepsake.
- Take a quiet moment to breathe and reflect.
Even giving yourself permission to feel is a way of honoring love and loss.
